Deleted my 23 and Me data

Not that they knew my real name. But my relatives ratted me out.

TZ

For over 20 years I've been ssh'ing into a server in Washington (I paid for a life membership, but didn't really expect it to last this long.) It runs BSD, and it always displayed the date in UTC.

I just learned today that if I sent TZ in my environment, I can use any time zone I want.

The head of John the Baptist

I remember seeing this sculpture in the Rodin room at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, decades ago when I went there pretty regularly. I thought it was a little gruesome, and I didn't understand the story behind it -- I recall that the card describing the piece seemed to assume that everyone knew the story of John the Baptist. I didn't even know who he was.

Fast forward thirty years, and I visit the museum again. I see the sculpture, but this time I know the story. In fact, I've seen many pieces of art over the years depicting some part of the story.

I just noticed the other day that the name of Herodias's daughter -- the one who asked for John the Baptist's head -- is not named in the Bible. But I've seen so many depictions in art, and I've heard the story. How did we know her name? It turns out she is named in the Jewish Antiquities, but not in the New Testament.

Passport scene in Breaking Away

          MRS . BLASE
Here, did I ever show you this?
She takes a passport out of her purse on the table.

          DAVE
          It's a passport.

          MRS. BLASE
          They're quite cheap, you know.
A real bargain. I keep carrying
it with me. One of these days
there'll be a new girl at the
IGA and when I want to cash a
check she'll ask me for some
          Identification and I'll take
out my passport and say: Here.
          Won't that be something.

San Lyon band at Sounds of Mardi Gras

Not New Orleans, but Fresno, California. San Lyon has only been hitting the music festival circuit for a couple of years, but their bright delivery of manouche jazz immediately captivated audiences. I had the privilege of hearing them for several sets at the Fresno festival last weekend. Their lead singer was missing, having scored an acting gig in New York. Hopefully, she will be back soon; or hopefully, her dream of hitting it big as an actress will come true.

Restricted 3-body problem predicted Trojan asteroids

The restricted 3-body problem simplifies the issue to one body that is massless, and all three are in a plane. The two bodies with mass orbit each other. In the rotating frame of reference where the two finite-mass bodies are stationary, there are 5 points on the plane where the third body can remain motionless. Depending on the ratio of the masses, these points are either unstable or stable to small perturbations. The sun and Jupiter fit the ratio where two of the points are stable. The existence of the Trojan asteroids was predicted 134 years before they were actually found.
