Make Harvest of Today

"Trust nothing for to-morrow's sun:
Make harvest of today."

The inscription on the sundial at General Vallejo's house in Sonoma is just the last line. The quote is from William Gladstone's translation from Latin of the poem by Horace.

Babbage's Difference Engine

The model of Babbage's Difference Engine at the computer museum will not be going away when the Visible Storage exhibit is closed.

I found a book in the gift shop about Ada Lovelace. The first computer program is generally considered to be Section G of her appended notes to the translation of "Sketch of the Analytic Engine" by L. F. Menabrea.

Aperture Effect

Did you know that point sources of light appear as starbursts if you use a small aperture? For long exposure night shots, I always tended to opt for larger apertures (or my camera would programmatically select those).

Denny's Redux

This image is more like what I had wanted after looking at the previous Denny's photo. Very little post processing. Might have framed it a little more to the right (maybe next time).

Carousel Horse

The horses at the renovated carousel at the Santa Monica Pier are hand carved and wonderfully detailed.

Denny's

The image got a little noisy when I tried to tease some detail out of the shadows. What I really should have done was wait about 10 minutes for the sky to get a little darker, and taken a longer exposure. No problem, I thought, I'll just come back the next day. But the next day was cloudy. And so was the next. And then I had to work late the rest of the week. Never got a chance to go back. Carpe lux, eh?

Sculpture shadows line up on the solstices and equinoxes. Of course, you can't tell that in this picture.

Caltrain

For a while I've been trying to get a good shot of the Sunnyvale Caltrain station. I got this idea from the "Sunnyvale" photo pool on Flickr. Now that daylight savings time has ended, I guess I'll have even more night shots.
